About

The Colorado college system has recently been plagued by various problems resulting from student alcohol use and abuse. Five unintentional alcohol-related student deaths have occurred during the 2004 Fall semester in Colorado alone, as well as a number of other alcohol-related problems, including assault and sexual assault, drunk driving, vandalism, and even instances of rioting. Furthermore, despite alcohol being legally regulated, the preponderance of problematic alcohol use occurs among those using it illegally. Meanwhile, those students who choose an ostensibly safer, albeit also illegal alternative—marijuana—often find themselves under stricter scrutiny by law enforcement and school officials, and in many cases face harsher penalties.

Nevertheless, colleges and universities continue to maintain policies that fail to prevent the dangers associated with alcohol, provide no realistic alternative to alcohol for student recreation, and, as a result, fuel the culture of alcohol that has pervaded contemporary Colorado campus life. This is not to mention the number of students whose lives have been drastically altered or ruined as a result of unreasonable marijuana policies.

Safer Alternative For Enjoyable Recreation (SAFER) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to educate the public about the harmful consequences associated with alcohol, as compared with the much safer--yet illegal--substance: marijuana.
