"Almost every problematic student-behavior issue has at its roots in the over-consumption of alcohol."
-- Sheldon Steinbach, general counsel for the American Council on Education
Associated Press, August 30, 2006

SAFER's mission is to educate the public about the simple fact that marijuana is less harmful than alcohol. By doing so, we hope to change the general consensus in this country surrounding marijuana and marijuana laws. Once the public is convinced that marijuana is a safer recreational alternative to alcohol, the support for marijuana prohibition should crumble.

One of SAFER's primary objectives is to work with campus leaders around the country to change university policies related to marijuana possession. The primary means of accomplishing this goal is by contrasting the harms of alcohol and marijuana. We have already passed referenda calling for reduced marijuana penalties on five major university campuses. Moreover, this campaign to educate students and administrators about the relative harms of alcohol and marijuana was recently the subject of a cover story in the Chronicle of Higher Education, a highly respected national publication. How many alcohol-related tragedies must occur on college campuses before our universities quit pushing students to drink and acknowledge that marijuana is safer than alcohol?
