A group of University Of Arkansas students is pushing for a referendum which would decrease penalties for student marijuana use.
The U Of A chapter of the National Organization For The Reform Of
Marijuana Laws is campaigning for what they call the "safer" referendum.
The group feels penalties for marijuana use should be no greater than those for student alcohol use.
The referendum is on the ballot of the associated student government
election, which began last Monday.
Rob Pfountz with NORML says, "Quite a lot of students have looked at it
favorably. They've come out. We're trying to get more students to vote.
We're trying to get out the vote because last year we only got 6% of
the student population to vote in this, but our 1,700 signatures in and
of itself is more than that 6%."
Students can vote in the A-S-G election online.
The election ends April 9th.
