School Administration Would Have To Approve MeasureA student-run advisory committee at the University of Central Florida
is considering lessening the punishment for smoking marijuana so it
would be equal to the less-severe punishment for underage drinking, a
move that would have to be approved by administrators.
Some UCF students say that easing the rules on marijuana could keep
classmates from drinking and possibly curb the dangerous trend of binge
drinking.
"I don't think it's going to alter my position on the school," said UCF alum Lonnie Griesemer, whose daughter is considering attending his alma mater. "Because ultimately, it's going to be a decision she's going to have to make as a college student on campus."
"Me personally, it wouldn't affect me, but I could see a lot of people falling to marijuana. If equal, why not try it?" said Lonnie's daughter, Kristy Griesemer.
"It's been a part of college life for so long. In my dorm, if you get caught with marijuana, you get kicked out and face jail time, whereas, if you get caught with alcohol, you do community service," student Noah Hershman said. "But what's worse? I think drinking is worse, to be honest with you."
"As far as I've seen, alchohol is a bigger problem," Kristy Griesemer said.
The advisory committee -- the Golden Rule Review Committee -- was supposed to vote on the proposed change on Tuesday, but the vote has been postponed, although the topic will be discussed, Local 6 News reported. The committee can only recommend changes to the university administration, which has the final say on the matter.
A final vote could take place at the next meeting.
The administration said it takes every recommendation seriously. |
