Mason Tvert, Executive Director
Mason is responsible for the day-to-day operations of
the organization, including strategic planning, media relations,
lobbying, fundraising, and other assorted mayhem.
He co-founded SAFER in 2005, and served as its
executive director during its successful ballot initiative campaigns in
Denver in 2005 and 2007. He transitioned to campaign director for the SAFER Voter
Education Fund's statewide ballot initiative in Colorado in 2006, and he was once again named the organization's executive director in 2007. He
currently sits on the boards of SAFER and the SAFER Voter Education
Fund, as well as on the Denver Marijuana Policy Review Panel appointed
by Mayor John Hickenlooper.
Prior to starting SAFER, Mason worked on and
coordinated grassroots campaigns in his home-state of Arizona,
advocating for federal medical marijuana legislation and educating the
public about opposition from members of Arizona's congressional
delegation. He also worked in the Phoenix City Council Office, the Office of
the Arizona Attorney General, the Virginia State Senate, and on a variety of local
and federal candidate campaigns. He graduated with honors from the University of Richmond with
a degree in political science and journalism.
Mason resides in the Capitol Hill
neighborhood in Denver, where he spends his free time reading,
following Colorado politics, and attempting to play the banjo and
guitar. This spring he completed the Center for Progressive
Leadership's Colorado Political Fellowship, and he recently began
submitting non-marijuana-related columns to the Rocky Mountain News. Contact Mason at (303)-861-0033 or
