Denver voters nix city pot laws
Thursday, 03 November 2005
Voters in Denver decided to junk the city's law on marijuana but police say they will bust pot users on state violations.

The I-100 initiative was approved Tuesday by a 54 to 46 percent margin, the Denver Post reports, making it legal for anyone over 21 to possess up to an ounce of marijuana.

Supporters said the outcome shows support for freedom to choose what to do with one's own body.

One campaign strategy was to pit marijuana against alcohol, blaming the drink for things like domestic violence and deadly car accidents, The Rocky Mountain News reports.

They also targeted Mayor John Hickenlooper, an opponent of the measure and a bar owner. After the vote Hickenlooper said he was surprised and chalked it up to a symbolic changing of attitudes.

Denver police said they will still charge offenders of state marijuana laws.

Denver is the second big city to address pot laws in a year, and the third in the country.

Oakland, Calif., voters approved a measure last year that required city police to investigate other crimes before marijuana charges. Seattle already passed a similar law.
