Whatever the medical value of cannabis is, proponents of the new initiative make no bones about their view that there's nothing wrong with recreational marijuana use.

"People like to party. People like to alter their consciousness," [marijuana advocate Lanny] Swerdlow said. "We've been doing this for so long that there's probably a genetic reason for it. We've got to give people a safer alternative."[emphasis added]
