NORML Stash Blog: Notre Dame would prefer football players drink to death over smoking marijuana
Written by Mason Tvert

Russ Belville of NORML has a great piece posted on the NORML Stash Blog regarding the University of Notre Dame's hypocritical approach to marijuana and alcohol, particularly in light of a football player being busted for marijuana and a recent alcohol-related death involving a recruit.

An excerpt is below or you can CLICK HERE to read the entire piece:

If you are under the age of 21, both alcohol and marijuana are drugs that are illegal for you to possess and use.  But only one of them is celebrated in our culture, considered a normal part of “growing up”, and leads to countless student sexual assaults, violence, and the occasional death...

...Y’know, college kids just naturally engage in illegal drinking, it’s what college kids do.  Sure, some of ‘em die from drinking games, keg stands, and beer bongs, so why is it even an issue?  But if the football player is caught smoking a cannabis bong…?

Announcing the Women's Marijuana Movement
Written by SAFER

SAFER is pleased to announce its latest project, the Women's Marijuana Movement (WMM). We hope you'll take a minute to visit www.WomensMarijuanaMovement.org to check it out, join the movement, and leave a testimonial explaining why you support ending marijuana prohibition.

As its name implies, the Women's Marijuana Movement is a movement of women (and men) who see the harms caused by our current marijuana laws and want to see them changed. And with the tagline, "Safer for us. Safer for all," it will certainly be advocating for the legal and regulated availability of marijuana as a safer alternative to alcohol.

Help Us Celebrate "Tell Your Mothers" Day!

Since Mother's Day is just around the corner, our first action was to create a "Tell Your Mothers" Day eCard! Just click on the button below to send a quick eCard that explains how marijuana is relatively safe and should be an entirely acceptable alternative to alcohol.  And in the spirit of "Tell Your Mothers" Day, you will have the option of sending your mom a copy of Marijuana is Safer: So why are we driving people to drink? as a gift for a total of just $10 (free shipping!).On Thursday, May 6th, WMM will be holding a news conference in he 3rd floor conference room of the Colorado State Capitol Building at noon, after which it will be distributing copies of the book, Marijuana is Safer: So why are we driving people to drink? to all female legislators as Mother's Day gifts. If you plan on joining us, we encourage you to dress appropriately for the occasion to ensure we make a good impression.

Scheduled attendees of the news conference include mothers and their children, grandmothers, college students, medical marijuana patients and dispensary operators, substance abuse treatment counselors, former anti-drug activists, and professional women who are simply open about their personal marijuana use. SAFER Executive Director Mason Tvert's mom will also be in town to lend some motherly support!

Why Do You Support the Movement?

Whether you use marijuana or simply recognize that society would be better off if it were legal, we want to hear from you!  Just click on the button below to visit the WMM Testiominals page where you can share your feelings or experiences and see what others are saying.

Former Cop: Americans are being driven to drink
Written by SAFER

http://www.saferchoice.org/images/SAFER/howardwooldridge.jpgIn a story that appeared in Oregon newspaper, "The World," former police detective Howard Wooldridge of Citizens Opposing Prohibition (COP) highlighted the relative safety of marijuana compared to alcohol and how current laws drive people to drink.

Americans are being driven to drink. That's how lobbyist and retired police detective Howard Wooldridge views marijuana prohibition.

'The irony here is, marijuana is a much safer drug for the user and their family. And we're driving people to drink because drinking it's legal," Wooldridge said. 'It's obviously counterproductive."

In 18 years in law enforcement, Wooldridge said, he responded to zero violent crimes sparked by marijuana use. Compare that with 1,300 calls on homicides, suicides, rapes, assaults, and child abuse cases involving alcohol.

In his recent column on CNBC, Rhode Island State Senator Joshua Miller explains why he and his constituents support an end to marijuana prohibition.  Sen. Miller is the chair of the Rhode Island Commission on Prohibition of Marijuana, which recently recommended that the state decriminalize marijuana possession.

We were pleased to see that CNBC highglighted the following line, otherwise you can CLICK HERE for the full article:

"What we soon realized was that Rhode Island was spending too much time and money arresting individuals whose only crime was to possess a substance that is safer than alcohol." (SAFER's emphasis added)
