SAFER launched its "Cindy McCain: Drug Dealer" campaign yesterday and it has already received quite a bit of attention.

The Raw Story was first to break the news:

A group dedicated to legalizing marijuana use is launching a new campaign Tuesday aimed at pointing to hypocrisy in a country that could have as its first lady a woman who made millions selling a substance that's killed tens of thousands of people while purveyors of a relatively harmless herb are imprisoned.

Word of the campaign traveled quickly across the blogosphere -- including this interesting take from popular beltway gossip blog Wonkette -- and has already surfaced in the mainstream news with a Denver Post story. As a result, even Cindy's husband has heard about it:

The McCain campaign declined to comment.

They may not have commented, but we all know what McCain's booze-fueled campaign was truly thinking: DRINK UP!

What is the difference between potential future First Lady Cindy McCain and a MARIJUANA dealer?

Cindy deals a more harmful drug: ALCOHOL

That's right, Cindy McCain -- wife of presumptive presidential candidate Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) -- is an alcohol dealer. As the the chairperson and majority shareholder of Hensley & Co., one of the nation's largest distributors of Anheuser-Busch beer, she made a fortune dealing more than 23 million cases of beer last year.

Whereas selling millions of dollars worth of alcohol could land Cindy in the White House, selling just a few hundred or thousand dollars worth of marijuana continues to land countless Americans in the big house. This is despite the fact that marijuana is FAR less harmful than alcohol both to the user and to society.

"Cindy McCain: Drug Dealer" is a provocative new campaign designed to highlight this hypocrisy and spread the message that marijuana is safer than alcohol and should be treated that way.

What to do, what to do...

Erin Rosa at the Colorado Independent wonders aloud (or at least in writing) what marijuana reform proponents, including SAFER, will be doing during this year's DNC in Denver.

Denver officials may not want to highlight the fact that the Democratic National Convention this August will be held in a city that was first in the nation to make private possession of marijuana legal for adults, but legalization proponents are sure to capitalize on the media attention during the event...

SAFER isn't willing to say exactly what it has planned for the convention just yet, but it will be doing something to bring attention to the legalization cause while the whole world is watching, Tvert confirms.

Considering all of the cameras, it'd be stupid not to.

SAFER in Denver Post: DNC could be "greener"

Today's Denver Post includes a column from SAFER Executive Director Mason Tvert about how the Democratic National Convention is being held in Denver, the first city in the nation to make marijuana legal for adults. In particular, it highlights the hypocrisy in how the convention and Democratic Party leaders handle the marijuana issue compared to what appears to be their drug of choice: alcohol.

Yet while Democratic officials are still out to lunch on marijuana, they do not seem to have any problem with having a few drinks while they're at it. In fact, they appear to be quite comfortable allowing, using and even promoting alcohol, despite the growing mountain of evidence that shows it is more harmful than marijuana.

Taking this inconsistency to the extreme, we are confronted by the almost comical hypocrisy of a political convention that is literally running on beer. The DNC has gladly accepted corporate sponsorships from Molson Coors and Anheuser-Busch.

Moreover, when it comes to alcohol consumption, convention-goers will not be the only ones guzzling beer; so will many of their cars, as organizers recently announced that a number of vehicles will be using beer sludge as fuel.
