Sexy Pizza's now offering up a little politics with
its pie. The Capitol Hill pizzeria, located at 1018 East 11th Avenue,
started offering a new pizza last week, with a portion of each purchase
going to Safer Alternative for Enjoyable Recreation, a local drug policy
reform organization.
The SAFER pizza comes with red sauce, basil, tomatoes, garlic, feta
and mozzarella and will sell for the same prices as its other specialty
pizzas: $17.99 for a large; $16.99 for a medium; and $13.99 for a small.
One dollar of each pizza, and 25 cents of each slice, will be set aside
for SAFER. Slices go for $2.50 apiece.
Sexy Pizza owner Kayvan Khalatbari says
he got the idea after chatting with SAFER executive director Mason
Tvert. The idea for the toppings, he says, originated with an employee
who had tried the pizza combination and wanted to put it on the menu.
The new pie launched in association with SAFER's recent fifth anniversary celebration. |

World-renowned hemp and cannabis activist Jack Herer passed away today at the age of 71. Jack is the author of the seminal and influential book, The Emperor Wears No Clothes, which was translated into over a dozen different languages, and he is the subject of the documentary, The Emperor of Hemp. Below is a video of Jack's last speech, which he delivered at last year's Portland Hempstock just before having a heart attack. A video documenting that incident follows after the jump. As the Salem-News reported earlier today:
The Hemperor, Jack Herer has DiedBy Bonnie King, Salem-News.comThe global cannabis community mourns the loss of
the great Jack Herer. (SALEM, Ore.) - The sad news has been confirmed. Jack
Herer, author of Emperor Wears No Clothes and renowned around the world
for hemp activism, has died at 11:17 a.m. today, in Eugene, Oregon. Jack Herer suffered a heart attack last September just
after speaking on stage at the Portland HempStalk festival. The last
seven months have proven to be a huge challenge to the man, with several
health issues making his recovery complicated. Jack Herer's health has been poor lately, this last
week there have been reports of the severity, and an outpouring of
prayers on his behalf. "It's shocking news, even after these last seven,
trying months," said Paul Stanford, THCF Executive Director. "Jack Herer has been a good friend and associate of
mine for over 30 years. I was there when he had the heart attack at our
Hempstalk festival and I know he wouldn’t appreciate the quality of life
he's endured these last months. Still he will be greatly missed. I
honor his memory." "No other single person has done more to educate people
all across the world about industrial hemp and marijuana as Jack Herer.
His book is translated into a dozen different languages, it's a
bestseller in Germany," added Stanford. "The Hempstalk stage will forever be the Jack Herer
Memorial stage. And, a Memorial is planned to be built where he fell
that day," Stanford said."His legacy will continue to inspire and encourage for
generations to come."

For the most part, the marijuana movement has long been seen as a
predominantly male group -- but that's about to change. Just in time for
Mothers Day, a variety of local pot activists (most of them female) are
launching the Women's Marijuana Movement with the belief that the
fairer sex will be integral to ending marijuana prohibition. |

Women from all age groups and from all walks of life came out to
Colorado’s State Capitol in Denver to help launch the Women’s Marijuana
Movement.
Women’s Marijuana Movement
Jessica Corry is a mother, wife, lawyer, a conservative political
activist, and co-founder of the Women’s Marijuana Movement. She is not a
marijuana user; she is a proponent of common sense. Corry feels the
marijuana laws are unjust.
Mason Tvert, founder of SAFER, has worked with Corry on these issues
for some time and they decided that the time is right. “Mason and I have
talked about doing this for a long time and SAFER provided the critical
infrastructure support to make it happen,” says Corry. SAFER is a
national organization based in Denver that promotes marijuana as being a
safer alternative to alcohol and prescription drugs. |
