KFSM 5 (AR): U of A Students Push for Lesser Penalties for Marijuana Use

A group of University Of Arkansas students is pushing for a referendum which would decrease penalties for student marijuana use.

The U Of A chapter of the National Organization For The Reform Of Marijuana Laws is campaigning for what they call the "safer" referendum.

College leaders have undertaken countless campaigns to reduce binge drinking on their campuses, but a developing grassroots movement calls for an herbal remedy, writes Jack Stripling for Inside Higher Ed. SAFER, a non-profit organisation that supports the reform of marijuana laws, is calling on college presidents to join its cause, arguing that students would be safer taking bong hits than tequila shots.

The group is specifically seeking the endorsement of presidents who signed the Amethyst Initiative, which stated that the current legal drinking age of 21 might be contributing to drinking deaths and should be re-examined, the Inside Higher Ed article continues. SAFER (Safer Alternative for Enjoyable Recreation) has dubbed its plea to presidents the "Emerald Initiative."

Arkansas Traveler: Marijuana might be 'safer,' but it's still not legal

Last week, 14 percent of the student body voted in the Associated Student Government executive elections and approved all three ballot initiatives - including the SAFER Referendum, which called for punishments of alcohol and marijuana offenses to at least be equal, citing that marijuana is "safer" to use than alcohol.
